Entry #6. Sonder

What is Sonder?

My first time hearing the word Sonder was when one of my closest friends had introduced me to a popular RNB artist that goes by the name Brent Faiyaz. An artist who was born in Maryland and focused on a more melodic tone in his music with meaningful rhymes and phrases throughout his lyrics. Brent was influenced by the likes of Lauryn Hill, Lil Wayne and even Madonna. Shortly after getting into his music I had found a separate band that Brent played in that goes by the Name Sonder. This would go on to be my favorite band and I continued to listen to Sonder for about 2 years before I truly understood the definition of the word.

Examples for perspective

One day while I was sitting in class I got the random urge to google the definition and finally get to the bottom of what this mysterious word means. After reading the definition I did not think much of it and went along with my day, I finished class got in my car and got on the freeway. 5 Minutes into driving I was met with a huge amount of traffic and an accident that would keep me stuck on the freeway for about an hour. And in that moment while I was angry and annoyed that I was stuck in traffic on my way home I finally began to understand the meaning of the word Sonder. To me my biggest issue was studying for a test the next day and making sure that I got home in time, while just a hundred feet away there was someone who had just experienced a dangerous life altering event. That's when it finally hit me that every person in every car on the freeway is heading somewhere and has some kind of plan. It may be people that we will never meet or someone that you will run into 5 years later but the idea that every single person leads a life that is just as important to them as ours is to us. This opened my eyes in more ways then one, Understanding the meaning of Sonder helped me become more forgiving towards family members and even random strangers. Being able to view the world as each person is living their life the same way I live my life allowed me to connect with the idea that everybody has something in common.

Outlook on life

Understanding Sonder allowed me to look at my problems in a different perspective and has shifted my outlook on life to help me stop letting every day actions and results affect my mood and the way I feel throughout the day. Instead I attempt to look at everything from a positive point of view knowing that no matter how big the issue may be there is always someone out there who is dealing with a worse situation.

Bedtime: NOT LATE ENOUGH! Image Source      Growing up every kid has one enemy that ends up being their best friend in the future: sleep. Sleep is something that every adults overlooks as a kid, part of being a kid is hating bed time, and as a kid I made it my personal mission to find a way to stay up somehow after my parents made me go to bed. And while i was successful at staying up at night, I was failing the ability to wake up in time for school. From a young age this habit slowly carried into my teenage years and has slowly crept into my adult years as well causing me to lookback on past experiences and understand the importance of building good habits from a young age. As I get older I learn the benefits of adequate sleep as a child and I can't help but wonder what would be different about me If I just got a little more sleep while I was developing. Any successful person knows that one of the most important if not the most important activity is sleep, sleep i...
