    Hashtags are one of the most popular concurrent social media terms to date, The evolution of the Hashtag or pound sign depending on the name you grew up hearing. Originally the hashtag carried many uses, Some say that the hashtag closely resemble a set of stripes on a soldiers sleeve and others know it for the use of the symbol before a number to give that number a "tag", For example (" Item #5 on the list"). But the Hashtag began to gain traction in the early 2010s, and took social media by storm. Once a simple symbol, it was transformed into a highway for people to find topics of interest through the use of  popular social media sites. Twitter was the first platform to adopt the symbol and quickly integrate it into its day to day use, turning the idea into a viable marketing tactic. Popular sites like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and even YouTube shortly took after Twitter by beginning to introduce trending feeds and displaying hashtags with high traffic on the home page.

Throughout the years the use of hashtags became more and more popular, from the original "#Selfie" which was a trend for people to take face photos (Selfies) with Cellphones usually around the world or even in  the comfort of your own home. Hashtags would eventually grow and integrate into many different genres even finding their way into political topics such as the #BlackLivesMatter movement  which took the internet by storm on may 26th, of 2020. This hashtag was recorded to have been used at least 45,000,000 times since its appearance on the internet and over half of the recorded posts and tags were created by the beginning of may till the end of September! This hashtag was used to shed light on the issue of police brutality on African American individuals, The influence the movement had was astounding, people from all around the world uniting to fight against inequality by posting their support and helping bring light to the situation.




 Why it works


Throughout the years hashtags have slowly cemented their presence in the biggest social media platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter and even YouTube, Every post that is posted today includes some sort of Hashtag, Hashtags have become the way content is separated and generalized into. These days, there are at least one hashtag related to the video in every description, "bio," and comment section on the internet.
